USM Orients Security Personnel on Bawal Bastos LawThe University of Southern Mindanao (USM) conducted an orientation to its university security personnel on the Safe Spaces Act or Bawal Bastos Law on May 14, 2026 at the University Skyroom, Administration Building, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato.During the orientation, Dr. Vicente Delos Reyes, Director of the Security Services and Management Office (SSMO), emphasized the importance of equipping USM security personnel and officers with proper knowledge of the law. He explained that security personnel interact daily with employees, students, visitors, and other stakeholders inside the university, making their awareness and understanding of the law essential.“As USM is a gender-sensitive institution, it is very important that all security officers and guards are aware of this law to avoid incidents and cases related to this,” Delos Reyes emphasized.Atty. Marione John C. Seto, the University Legal Officer, led the discussion during the orientation. He explained that the law protects students, employees, teachers, visitors, and everyone within the university premises.Seto also reminded the participants to follow the three important rules under the campaign: “Walang bastos na salita” (No offensive words), “Walang bastos na tingin” (No offensive looks), and “Walang bastos na galaw” (No offensive actions). After the discussion, the participants actively joined the open forum, where they raised questions and shared insights about the implementation of the law inside the campus.Before concluding the activity, Seto encouraged the security personnel to treat every individual with respect and to uphold the rules and policies of USM at all times.The Security Services and Management Office (SSMO), in coordination with the Gender and Development Office, spearheaded the activity.
