Educators, researchers, and advocates of indigenous languages and mother tongue education will meet at the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) in September 2027 for the 2027 International Convergence on Indigenous Languages, Literacy, and Eco-Systems.

USM and 170+ Talaytayan Mother Language Education (MLE) Inc. will jointly organize the conference following the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement on October 30, 2026, at the University Commercial Building in USM, Kabacan, Cotabato.

USM President Jonald L. Pimentel signed the agreement on behalf of the university, while Talaytayan Founding Chair Ricardo Ma. D. Nolasco represented the organization. Vice President for Research, Development and Extension Dr. Debbie Marie B. Verzosa, Extension Services Office Director Dr. Glyn G. Magbanua, and Talaytayan President and Trustee Antonio D. Igcalinos witnessed the signing.

Participants will share research, experiences, and practices on indigenous languages, literacy, and mother tongue education. The conference will also examine ways to sustain indigenous languages and strengthen mother tongue education, particularly in communities where these languages remain part of everyday communication and cultural identity.

Under the agreement, USM will provide the venue, facilities, technical support, and personnel for the conference. Talaytayan will handle the academic preparations, including the selection of resource speakers and the review of research papers and presentation proposals.

The two partners will also invite local and international participants, resource speakers, and organizations to encourage wider participation and discussion.

The conference also relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those on quality education, gender equality, sustainable communities, and inclusive institutions.
