The University of Southern Mindanao (USM), through the USM Agricultural Research and Development Center (USMARDC), was recognized with the Roberto E. Coronel Fruit Conservation Award during the 32nd National Fruit Symposium held on July 15, 2026, at the Development Academy of the Philippines in Tagaytay City, Cavite.
The Roberto E. Coronel Fruit Conservation Award is presented to an individual, group, or organization that has made significant contributions to the conservation and sustainable use of the country’s fruit and nut biodiversity.
This year, USMARDC, under the leadership of Dr. Jurhamid C. Imlan, received the recognition for its long-standing work in conserving the country’s fruit genetic resources while supporting research, varietal improvement, farmer development, and the fruit industry. Through its germplasm collections, the center has preserved important fruit species and turned these genetic resources into opportunities for research, innovation, and agricultural development.
During the awarding ceremony, Vice President for Research, Development and Extension Dr. Debbie Marie B. Verzosa accepted the award on behalf of the University. She said the recognition serves as a reminder for USMARDC to continue its work in fruit conservation.
“This award is not a finish line for USMARDC; it is a renewal of our vows. We pledge to continue transforming fruit conservation into a dynamic driver of innovation, ensuring that the rich fruit heritage of the Philippines thrives for generations to come,” Dr. Verzosa said.
In her message, she also acknowledged the contributions of former researchers and senior leaders of USMARDC whose work laid the foundation for the center’s accomplishments. She likewise recognized the leadership of Dr. Imlan, the dedication of the center’s researchers and staff, and the Philippine Fruit Association, Inc. (PhilFruits), which conferred the award.
PhilFruits, the organization behind the award, is a leading association that promotes the advancement of the Philippine fruit industry through research, technology, and collaboration among researchers, growers, and other industry stakeholders..
