University of Southern Mindanao (USM) President Dr. Jonald L. Pimentel called for research and technology that respond to the actual needs of farmers during the Provincial Farm Family Congress 2026 on October 21 at the Provincial Gymnasium, Capitol Compound, Amas, Kidapawan City.

In his keynote message, Pimentel noted that farmers continue to deal with rising prices of seeds, fertilizer, fuel, and other farm inputs, as well as unpredictable weather and low prices of farm products. He said farmers need practical support, access to appropriate technology, and better market opportunities to help improve their income.

Pimentel said USM can help by bringing the university’s research and knowledge closer to farming communities and using them to address problems encountered in the field. He also emphasized the value of farmers’ own experience, saying their knowledge of the land and local conditions should complement scientific research.

“No single institution can address all the challenges facing agriculture and no one has a monopoly on knowledge,” he said, stressing the importance of government agencies, universities, agricultural organizations, and farmers working together.

The congress, organized by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist of Cotabato with its partner agencies, brought together farmers, fisherfolk, young people, local officials, and other stakeholders in agriculture.

The event also recognized individuals and groups for their contributions to agriculture and fisheries, including 10 national Gawad Saka awardees and provincial awardees in high-value crops, rice farming, and 4-H Club model vegetable gardening. Agri-fishery resolutions and the project coordinators of the Provincial Agriculturist’s Office were also presented.

Carrying the theme “Matatag na Pamilyang Magsasaka: Produktibo, Maunlad, at Matatag sa Bawat Hamon at Kalamidad,” the congress highlighted the need to support farming families as they deal with the challenges that affect their livelihood.
