The University of Southern Mindanao, through the USM Satellite Socio-Economic Research and Data Analytics Center (SERDAC), visited Chiang Mai University (CMU) to look into its agricultural, agro-industrial, research, and tourism practices that may be considered in developing SOCCSKSARGEN as an agro-industrial center and agro-eco-cultural tourism hub on August 11, 2026, in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The benchmarking visit was part of the project “Benchmarking SOCCSKSARGEN Towards Transitioning into an Agro-Industrial Center and Agro-Eco-Cultural Tourism Hub,” funded by the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) SOCCSKSARGEN Region.
During the visit, Dr. Roy Gacus, and Dr. Meldred Samblaceño from USM, toured CMU’s agricultural and agro-industrial production areas, where it observed the production of rice, durian, green vegetables, red tilapia, and koi fish. The team also looked into how these agricultural activities are managed alongside research and other university initiatives.
Laboratory and agro-industrial facilities were also included in the visit, giving the team a closer look at laboratory analysis, quality assurance, product development, packaging, and labeling. These areas showed how agricultural products are processed and prepared for markets beyond raw production.
The team also met with CMU officials during a courtesy meeting led by Assistant Professor Dr. Worakanya Buranapattana, Assistant to the President of CMU. Discussions covered possible areas for academic collaboration and knowledge exchange in relation to the benchmarking project. CMU also documented the engagement through its Center for Corporate Communications and Alumni Relations (CCARC).
The visit forms part of USM Satellite SERDAC’s work in gathering information that can guide the project’s recommendations for SOCCSKSARGEN. In particular, the team is looking into how universities and industries can work together in agriculture, agro-industry, research, and tourism—areas that are central to the region’s development plans.

Bahagi ang pagbisita ng proyektong “Benchmarking SOCCSKSARGEN Towards Transitioning into an Agro-Industrial Center and Agro-Eco-Cultural Tourism Hub,” na pinondohan ng Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) SOCCSKSARGEN Region.
