April 30, 2026
Graduate students of the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) from the Extension and Rural Development programs conducted monitoring, needs assessment, and outreach program in Barangay Pinamaton on April 25, 2026, reinforcing the university’s commitment to community engagement.
Students, faculty mentors, and local stakeholders participated in a collaborative effort to better understand the current conditions of the barangay. Through systematic data gathering, community consultations, and participatory discussions, the team assessed key aspects including gains from the previous intervention, particularly the establishment of community garden, and other possible interventions needed by the community.
Professors from the USM Graduate School to wit, Dr. Gelyn V. Amilbahar and Dr. Sedra A. Murray, spearheaded the activity and provided strategic direction and hands-on mentorship to the 24 graduate students. Under their guidance, the students employed participatory approaches that engaged residents through consultations, interviews, and collaborative discussions. The objective was to gain a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the community’s needs, priorities, and prevailing conditions.
This activity served as a platform in applying theories and concepts of extension and community development.
