Senator Ninoy Aquino, SULTAN KUDARAT— The University of Southern Mindanao, led by Extension Services Office (ESO) Director Dr. Glyn B. Gabano-Magbanua, met with Senator Ninoy Aquino Mayor, Hon. Rafael George L. Flauta III, to explore partnerships in education, tourism, cultural preservation, and biodiversity conservation.

Held on August 14, 2026, at the Mayor’s Office, the meeting envisioned a partnership aimed at sustainable development through inclusive initiatives, ranging from educational advancement, eco-tourism enhancement, and cultural and biodiversity protection.

“Nakita kasi namin ‘yung potential ng mga tao dito sa SNA kaya gusto sana naming i-eye ang partnership with USM because you have experts there that would later on equip our students,” said Hon. Mayor Flauta, justifying the need to push for collaboration with the university.

To establish the timeline, ESO Director Dr. Magbanua laid out a potential roadmap for the partnership by proposing a 10-year plan.

“Super rich kasi ‘yung biodiversity ninyo dito and we also have IPs here, which is why we want our partnership to not just focus on education but also address various problems in your municipality,” expressed ESO Director Dr. Magbanua.

To work toward the formalization of the partnership, SNA will form a technical working group to spearhead local implementation and documentation. Meanwhile, USM will finalize a proposal outlining capacity-building activities and extension projects tailored to the municipality’s needs.

Alongside ESO Director Dr. Magbanua, the USM team included Dr. Florence Roy P. Salvaña (Extension Unit Head), Dr. Cherie Cano-Mangaoang (Sustainable Community Development Cluster Head), Prof. Ellen Joy M. Farala (Strategic Partnership and Governance Cluster Head), Ms. Ritchel O. Torres (Knowledge Management Cluster Head), Prof. Anamarie B. Uyangurin (Monitoring and Impact Assessment Unit Head), and Mr. Jimwell P. Pande (Extension Editor).

The meeting underscored the university’s commitment to institutional partnerships, fostering inclusive growth and collaborative solutions for sustainable development.
