October 22, 2026
The University of Southern Mindanao (USM), through its Security Services and Management Office (SSMO), conducted a two-day Incident Command System Executive Course on October 21–22, 2026, at the USM Skyroom, Administration Building, Kabacan, Cotabato.
The training covered five modules, with discussions led by Mr. Arnulfo Villaruz, retired Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) officer; Mr. Donald Homez, head of the DRRM Office of the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Magpet; and Ms. Jurimae Almediano, an officer from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).
The course introduced participants to the Incident Command System (ICS) and how it can be applied in managing incidents and coordinating emergency response.

For participant Jennifer E. Sinco, the training was helpful, although she felt that two days was not enough to cover the subject thoroughly. She recommended conducting more training sessions and involving more personnel so that more university employees would be ready to respond during emergencies and disasters.
Dr. Glyn G. Magbanua, another participant, also shared how the training had given her important realizations. She hoped that future sessions would be longer and include more topics to help participants gain a deeper understanding of emergency preparedness and response.

Dr. Vicente Delos Reyes, director of the SSMO, said the office wants to help build a university that is not only academically excellent but also safe, resilient, and disaster-ready.
“Let us work together toward a common objective: protecting lives, safeguarding university property and resources, and ensuring the continuity of essential university operations during emergencies and disasters,” Delos Reyes said.
USM President Dr. Jonald L. Pimentel welcomed the successful conduct of the training, particularly in light of recent events. He stressed the importance of preparing university personnel to respond to emergencies and provide timely assistance when disasters and calamities occur.
