The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region XII for the implementation of the Meteor Guardians Kabacan Project at DILG Regional Office XII, Koronadal City.
The project, formally titled “Generating Alternative and Innovative Practices for Mitigating Meteorological Disasters in Kabacan,” or simply “Meteor Guardians Kabacan,” focuses on helping the local community become more prepared for disasters. It also aims to promote sustainable practices through collaboration, technology, and capacity-building.
Spearheaded by the Sustainability and Resilience in Local Governance Innovation Laboratory (SUREGOV Innolab) of USM, the project seeks to address key environmental concerns in Kabacan, especially those related to climate change, flooding, water management, and disaster resilience. Through the partnership, research and innovation will be closely linked with local governance to create practical and effective solutions for the community.

It also aims to make sure that research does not stay on paper but is applied in real situations. This includes improving local programs, building skills among community members and officials, and supporting long-term development efforts.
Present during the signing were USM President Dr. Jonald L. Pimentel, along with Prof. Yvonne V. Saliling and Engr. Willie Jones Saliling. Also in attendance was the DILG Region XII Director Atty. Rochelle D. Mahinay-Sero.
With this agreement, DILG and USM reaffirm their shared goal of improving local development. They aim to work together in using research-based planning, strengthening agricultural productivity, improving environmental management, and supporting the overall growth of the community.
