A total of 346 freshmen officially began their college journey at the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) Libungan as they participated in the Meet and Greet with the University President on August 6, giving them the opportunity to learn about the University’s student support services, and opportunities for growth throughout their academic journey.

In his opening remarks, USM PALMA Campus Director Dr. Gideon Sumayo encouraged the new students to make the most of their time in the University by embracing every opportunity that comes their way.

We hope that you will maximize every opportunity, embrace every challenge, and leave the University not just with a diploma,” he said.

The activity gave freshmen the opportunity to personally meet USM President Jonald L. Pimentel, who assured them that the University remains committed to helping every student complete their studies and prepare for life beyond graduation.

President Pimentel shared that the good performance of USM PALMA has encouraged more students to pursue higher education at the University.

He also urged the freshmen to use their stay at USM productively by learning skills that could help them earn a living while pursuing their education. “While you stay here in PALMA, think of something that will help you earn a living as a student,” he told the students.

The University President assured the freshmen that the institution will continue to guide and support them throughout their academic journey while reminding them to observe the University’s policies and regulations.

As President of the University of Southern Mindanao, I’m so grateful to meet you here during your first year. I’m hoping on your fourth year we will meet again,” he said, expressing his hope of seeing the students complete their degrees and build a better future.

President Pimentel also encouraged the students to seize opportunities that could help them improve their lives and reminded them to always discover things in the right way as they pursue their education.

University Student Government President Mujahar D. Samad also welcomed the freshmen, encouraging them to continue striving despite the changes they may encounter in college life.

Aside from the Meet and Greet, the activity also included a symbolic planting of a Mabolo tree led by USM President Jonald L. Pimentel, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Leorence C. Tandog, and Office of Student Affairs Director Dr. Ma. Leida M. Donque. The tree planting symbolized the students’ new beginning at the University and their commitment to grow throughout their years in college.

The program also featured the induction of officers of the USM Libungan Autonomous Student Government (ASG), led by newly inducted President Jave C. Mangkawil, a Bachelor of Science in Criminology student.

The University likewise recognized the top-performing freshmen in the USM College Entrance Examination (USMCEE). Awardees were Glenn Jhon S. Perfas of BSE Mathematics (Rank 1); Zxian Paulo P. Miparanum and Mark Dave R. Villanueva, both from BS Agriculture (Rank 2); Macdenver Jordan of BSE Mathematics (Rank 3); Francis Dave Castillo of BSE English and Thyrence C. Peñaloza of BS Agriculture (Rank 4); and Roger V. Marquez Jr. of BSE Mathematics (Rank 5).

The activity marked the beginning of the freshmen’s journey at USM Libungan, introducing them to the University’s academic community while encouraging them to take advantage of opportunities that will help them succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Tandog, at Office of Student Affairs Director Dr. Ma. Leida M. Donque.
