A total of 109 students of the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) M’lang received financial assistance from the Local Government Unit (LGU) of M’lang, Cotabato, on October 19, 2206 at the M’lang Municipal Hall. The assistance aims to help students cover their educational expenses.

Under the leadership of Mayor Emmanuel M. Abonado, DVM, the LGU provided ₱5,000 to each student residing in M’lang and ₱1,000 to each non-resident student. This marks the first release of the municipality’s financial assistance for USM students to help them meet the costs of pursuing a college education.

“Mapalad ang mga estudyante dahil sinusuportahan sila ng LGU M’lang. I hope they will study well, finish on time, and make the most of this opportunity because the local government is investing in their education,” said Prof. Shandra Gonsang, PhD, of the USM Office of Student Affairs.

Prof. Gonsang expressed her gratitude to the municipal government for providing financial support to USM students. She also encouraged the recipients to prioritize their educational needs while helping their families when necessary.

Mayor Abonado thanked USM for bringing its educational services to the residents of M’lang, that allows local students greater access to higher education. He also shared that the LGU is developing classrooms on land it acquired in the municipality to support the university’s presence in the area.

He urged the students to remain committed to their studies and use the opportunity to build a better future for themselves, their families, and the M’lang community.

Meanwhile, USM President Jonald L. Pimentel, PhD, also thanked the LGU for extending financial assistance to the students. He reminded  the students to take care of their mental health and encouraged those facing personal or academic difficulties to approach their professors or guidance counselors instead of dealing with their problems alone.

The assistance is expected to help the 109 students meet some of their educational expenses as they continue their college studies. The initiative also highlights the LGU’s commitment to supporting local students in their pursuit of higher education.

Also present during the event were USM M’lang Director Robert Gornez, PhD; Director of the Office of International Affairs Associate Professor Bryan Lloyd P. Bretaña, representing the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs; LGU officials; and USM M’lang faculty members.
