Students from the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) earned recognition at the 2024 SIMIODE Challenge Using Differential Equations Modeling (SCUDEM) held from October 19 to November 12, 2024.

SCUDEM is a 3-student group modeling challenge that runs over multiple days culminating in a 10-minute video which is reviewed by at least 3 judges. The teams are allowed to choose one of the challenge problems in the areas of physics/engineering, chemistry/life sciences, and social sciences, and must develop a model using differential or difference equations and a presentation.

The team of Miles Angelo Sodejana (3rd year, BS Applied Physics), Manuel Lisondra (4th year, BS Applied Mathematics), and Eric Dominic Manginsay (4th year, BS Electronics and Communications Engineering) received the Outstanding Award for their entry, Sweet Tooth and Heavy Metal. Another team, composed of John Atilano Hermida (2nd year, BS Applied Physics), Curt Justin Marzo (2nd year, BS Chemistry), and Janna Angel Paderes (3rd year, BS Applied Mathematics), won the Meritorious Award. Both teams were coached by Dr. Leonard M. Paleta.

The competition also featured participants from prestigious institutions such as New York University (NYU) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
