Outstanding USM research projects were selected to represent the University during the 29th Regional Symposium on Research and Development Highlights organized by the SOCCSKSARGEN Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (SOXAARRDEC). The activity is the consortium’s biggest event of the year, the member institutions of SOXAARRDEC competed for the best papers and posters for research and development categories.

Two projects headed by Dr. Edward A. Barlaan won BEST PAPER awards. The project “Development, Evaluation and Validation of DNA Probe Kits for Detection and Monitoring of Banana Disease Pathogens In Digital PCR or Quantitative Real-Time PCR: A Boost To Banana Industry” won Best Paper in the Research Category. The project “Banana Health Diagnostics: Molecular Surveillance of Major Disease Casual Pathogens of Banana in Region 11 and 12 Using DNA Probe Kits,” with Jeralden O. Vido as research assistant, won Best Paper in the Development Category.

The project “Screening of Potential Endophytes as Biocontrol Agent Against Major in Emerging Leaf Diseases of Rubber” submitted two posters in the Basic/Applied Research Poster Category. The poster, “Screening of Potential Endophytes as Biocontrol Agent against Major and Emerging Leaf Diseases of Rubber” won First Best Poster, while the poster, “Encroachment of New Colletotrichum Species Infecting Rubber in The Philippines” won Second Best Poster. Dr. Ma. Teodora N. Cabasan, Dr. Bernadith T. Borja, Melesa M. Prado, and Jomarie V. Abubakar comprised the research team.

The distinguished evaluators of the event were Dr. Allan B. Siano, the Director of the Crops Research Division of the Department of Science and Technology- Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development, (DOST-PCAARRD), Dr. Emmanuel P. Leano, the Consortium Director of the Northern Mindanao Consortium for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development, and Dr. Cecirly G. Puig, the Research and Development Cluster Coordinator of the Southern Mindanao Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (SMAARRDEC).
