The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) celebrated its 70th Founding Anniversary on October 1, 2024, at the USM Auditorium, Kabacan, Cotabato, with the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) Representative Cong. Raymond Democrito C. Mendoza, as guest of honor and speaker.

Cong. Mendoza delivered an inspiring speech, emphasizing the vital role of USM in shaping future leaders and driving socio-economic development, particularly in Mindanao. He appreciated the university’s enduring commitment to academic excellence, research, and community service and encouraged the students to embrace the opportunities presented by their education.

One of the celebration’s highlights was the vibrant community dance of students, employees, retirees, alumni, and visitors.

Before the program, a floral offering, a reading of the founder’s life and her significant contributions to education and development, and a traditional kanduli ceremony transpired to honor Bai Hadja Fatima Matabay Namli Plang. This is to show gratitude for her leadership and vision in establishing the university.

Dr. Che Abdulshaik F. Plang, grandson of Mother Bai, expressed his deep appreciation for USM’s recognition of his grandmother and shared his pride in seeing her legacy live on through the university’s ongoing success.

The celebration was graced by the USM President Francisco Gil N. Garcia, the four USM Vice Presidents, Board of Regents, Administrative Council Members, Local Government Units, USM Retirees, USM Alumni Awardees, students, faculty and staff.
