The College of Trades and Industries (CTI) of the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) marked its 67th founding anniversary with a celebration at the CTI Covered Court, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato on September 12, 2025.

Dr. Jonald L. Pimentel, USM President, joined the occasion and recalled his own high school exposure to technical courses, including electricity, ceramics, and sheet metal, saying that these experiences made CTI close to his heart.

He described CTI as one of the oldest colleges in the university, a place that has trained generations of skilled workers and professionals. According to him, its role in developing practical expertise is central to both economic progress and individual growth.

President Pimentel urged students to pursue innovation not only as an academic exercise but also as a pathway to real-world application. He reminded them that patents and designs must be matched with commercialization to create broader opportunities.

“Without commercialization, your invention is nothing. Protect your innovations, but also take the next step, turn them into businesses that can employ others and generate impact,” he said.

He also recognized the commitment of the faculty members and the achievements of CTI graduates. He mentioned alumni who have advanced in their careers outside the country, saying their success proves the quality of training that CTI provides.

In his message, he also encouraged a change in mindset. Instead of asking, “Where can I work?” he urged students to think about how they can build enterprises, employ others, and expand opportunities within their communities.

President Pimentel encouraged alumni to give back to CTI by providing equipment and resources that will support new learners.

“As we celebrate 67 years of CTI, let us renew our commitment to excellence, embrace change, and continue shaping the future with innovation and purpose,” the President ended.
