Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte — The University of Southern Mindanao College of Business, Development, Economics and Management (USM-CBDEM) presented an extension project at the 2025 Philippine Association of Extension Program Implementors, Inc. (PAEPI) International Extension Congress (IEC), at Provincial Convention Center, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, on June 10 to 13, 2025.
Representing USM, Dr. Roy B. Gacus, a CBDEM faculty, presented “CBDEM—Delicacies: Capacity Building, Demonstration, and Enterprise Development of Maguindanaon Delicacies.” The initiative focuses on the entrepreneurial potential and promotion of traditional Maguindanaon delicacies—kagikit, dudol, and kumukunsi—as a livelihood and cultural preservation strategy.
The extension project team includes Dr. Analyn A. Gonzales, CBDEM College Extension Coordinator (CEC), along with Dr. Francisco Gil N. Garcia, Dr. Esmaira G. Gunsayan, Dr. Irving T. Fajarito Jr., and Prof. April Geraldine M. Quiñonero. Their work exemplifies the congress’s emphasis on integrating traditional practices with modern extension strategies for community development.
The congress focused on the theme “Embracing Science and Technology-Driven Extension Platforms for Sustainable and Inclusive Communities.” The event convened stakeholders from State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), National Government Agencies (NGAs), and Local Government Units (LGUs) across the Philippines.
The event featured six thematic areas: Agriculture, Food and Environment; Health, Nutrition and Wellness; Education; Culture, Social and Behavioral Sciences; Engineering, Smart Analytics and ICT; and Entrepreneurship and the Circular Economy.
USM’s active participation reinforces its role in advancing community-based extension programs rooted in culture, innovation, and enterprise, aligned with regional and national development goals.
