On a two-day Coconut Hybridization Program Mentorship and Consultation Writeshop, the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) faculty members and full-time researchers presented 13 research proposals on coconut research to the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) on March 21-22, 2024, at the USM Administration Skyroom, Kabacan, Cotabato.

The Coconut Hybridization Program (CHP) is part of the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP), which aims to boost farm productivity, increase farmers’ income, address supply-demand gaps, and foster sustainable growth in the Philippine coconut industry. DOST-PCAARRD oversees the allocation and implementation of CFIDP programs, with a particular focus on the components of research and development of CHP, receiving a 5% annual budget allocation under CFIDP.

Dr. Juanito Sangalang, a Consultant of the Coconut Hybridization Program of the Crops Research Division (CRD), DOST-PCAARRD, said that since USM is among the leading universities in coconut in Mindanao, they considered USM the call for proposal and writeshop along with Visayas State University (VSU) and University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB).

After the presentation of proposals, Dr. Sangalang, along with PCAARRD personnel, and the USM team, conducted a field tour at the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) in Aroman, Carmen, on the second day to see the existing facilities and research on coconuts.

The activity aimed to refine and finalize project proposals for submission to advance the Coconut Hybridization Program (CHP) and contribute to the sustainable growth of the Philippine coconut industry.
