USM actively participates in National Cacao Congress 2023

The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) took part in the two-day National Cacao Congress (Cacao 2.0) held at the SMX Convention in Davao City on November 16–17, 2023. Key participants in the cacao sector attended the event. Innovative technologies in numerous aspects of cacao production were on display at the event. Sharing expertise on the science behind the cultivation and processing of cacao is one of the highlights. Leading a group of resource persons from USM, Dr. Edward A. Barlaan (Professor Emeritus) presented a lecture entitled, The Science of Fermentation, Drying, and Bean Grading. Other respected presenters included Mr. Leandreux D. Ocasion who discussed Soil, Water and Nutrient Management for Cacao, and Dr. Tamie C. Solpot, who presented Disease/Pest Management of Cacao and Responsible Use of Pesticides.

During the congress, USM also signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) in the presence of Dr. Ma. Teodora Cabasan, Vice President for Research Development and Extension, with the Philippine Cacao Industry Council (PCIC), the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), the Department of Agriculture (DA), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA), TESDA, and ATI during the congress.
