The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) proudly secured multiple awards at the 2nd Philippine Microbiology Olympiad (PhilMO) – Mindanao Leg on November 19, 2025, at Central Mindanao University (CMU), Bukidnon.
USM’s champion team was composed of Ian Van Ancheta (4Micro), Jessa Faith Bacudo (3Micro), and Lhyn Maria Magsino (3Micro).
Meanwhile, another USM team—Paul Zionn Aquino (4Micro), Dolly Joy Ogatis (4Micro), and Krizens John Deslate (3Micro)—earned the first runner-up spot.
Individual participants Jinn Allan Luaña (1Micro) and Avegail Karissa Bulabog (3Micro) also represented USM in the activity.
The event served as a pre-convention activity of the Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting of the Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc.–Mindanao Chapter.
Several Mindanao universities joined the Olympiad, including Central Mindanao University (CMU), Mindanao State University–Marawi, MSU–Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), MSU–General Santos City, University of the Philippines Mindanao (UP-Min), and Xavier University–Ateneo de Cagayan.
Coaches Dr. Maria Elena Tanabe and Prof. Prince Nur-Hakeem Buisan trained and guided the students throughout the preparation and competition.
