
USM, LGU-Carmen Conduct Training on Organic Cardava Production, Management

Lingayen, Pangasinan — Ten student-researchers from the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSE) major in English, under the mentorship of Dr. Rowena V. Sosas of the University of Southern Mindanao–Kidapawan City Campus (USM-KCC), presented studies on Philippine languages at the Linguistic Society of the Philippines International Conference (LSPIC) on April 24–26, 2025, at Pangasinan State University (PSU), Lingayen, Pangasinan.
This year’s conference, attended by linguists and scholars from across the globe, served as a platform for USM-KCC delegates to showcase their research on regional languages, including Hiligaynon, Cebuano, and Ilonggo, emphasizing the institution’s growing role in advancing local linguistic scholarship in international academic fora.
The following student-researchers presented their theses during the conference:

- Frisk Jasper Q. Quirino – The Syntactic Structure of Hiligaynon Language
- Maerald Kate A. Ballo – Semantic Deviation in Ilonggo Humor
- John Lloyd S. Payao – Intergenerational Analysis of Cebuano Language in Kidapawan City
- Marialou O. Quinding – Codeswitching of Hiligaynon in Kidapawan City
- AJ R. Paradel – Morpholinguistic Analysis of Hiligaynon Language in Kidapawan City
- Shane Kimberly Terania – Comparative Study on the Lexicology of Hiligaynon and Cebuano Language
- Ruenjyl Iverlou S. Mundoc – Syntactic Analysis of Hiligaynon Intensifiers
- Rogie J. Jumao-as– The Lavender Linguistics in Kidapawan City
- Jona Ville L. Magtubo – Lexico-Pragmatic Analysis of Conversation
The international conference highlighted keynote and plenary lectures from distinguished linguists, including Professor Andrew Moody from the University of Macao in China, Professor Seohyun Paik from Hanyang Women’s University in Korea, and Professor Peter Joseph Torres from Arizona State University in the United States, who shared insights on emerging trends in global linguistics.
In an interview, Rogie J. Jumao-as, one of the student presenters, shared his experience on participating in the international research conference.
“The experience allowed us to expand our academic network and engage with fellow researchers and linguists from various institutions. It was a valuable opportunity to share our work, receive constructive feedback, and build confidence in presenting internationally,” Jumao-as said.
He added that representing the university was both an honor and a milestone.
“It showcased our academic exposure and growth. We’re truly proud to represent USM on a global platform…Proud kami!” He added.
The delegation expressed gratitude to the USM administration, especially University President Dr. Jonald L. Pimentel, Director for Research, Development, and Extension Dr. Debbie Marie B. Versoza, USM-KCC Chancellor Dr. Ronielyn F. Pinsoy, and Campus Director Dr. Dhealyn Decee V. Sabit, for their unwavering support in advancing faculty and student engagement in international academic platforms.
Participation in such a prestigious event affirms the caliber of research emerging from USM-KCC and enhances the visibility of Mindanao-based scholarship in global discussions on language, identity, and communication.
