Kabacan, Cotabato – The University of Southern Mindanao Office of International Affairs (USM-OIA) successfully hosted a lecture on The Reality of Violence, Human Rights Violations, and Harassment at Universities and Responses to Them at the USM Commercial Building on March 21, 2025.
A clinical psychologist specializing in social sciences and conflict resolution, Associate Professor Hiromi Yamauchi from the Harassment Consultation Office of Hiroshima University, Japan, served as the resource speaker.


Participants from various offices and academic units attended, including the Gender and Development Office (GAD), Research, Development, and Extension (RDE) Group, Office of Student Affairs (OSA), University Public Relations and Information Office (UPRIO), College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS), College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation (ISPEAR), and College of Health Sciences (CHS), and other offices in the administration.
The lecture covered gender-based violence, and harassment based on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) in the Philippines and Japan. Prof. Yamauchi discussed legal frameworks, preventive measures, and institutional responses to university harassment.


A discussion on USM’s gender-based violence cases and institutional responses followed, with representatives from the OSA, Center for Counseling and Development (CCD), and GAD assessing policies and exploring strategies to strengthen USM’s mechanisms against harassment and human rights violations.
Key university officials present included Vice President for Research, Development, and Extension (RDE) Dr. Debbie Marie B. Versosa, Extension Services Office (ESO) Director Dr. Glyn G. Magbanua, and OIA Director Bryan Lloyd P. Bretaña.
USM continues to promote human rights, gender sensitivity, and student welfare through education and policy enhancement, reinforcing its commitment to fostering a culture of respect, equality, and inclusivity.
