The University of Southern Mindanao (USM), in partnership with Asia Society Philippines and AidData, conducted an international discussion on September 16, 2024, held at the Commercial Building, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato.

The workshop, titled “Project on PRC Investments: Exploring Chinese Investments and Narratives in the Philippines”, explored the risks, rewards, and future of Chinese investments in the Philippines. A total of 36 participants from the academic and media sectors attended the workshop. They discussed aspects of Chinese-funded projects in the country that mainly focused on energy, communications, transport, and business services.

Organized by the USM Office of the President, spearheaded by Prof. Bryan Lloyd P. Bretaña, Executive Assistant for International Linkages/Programs of USM, and the USM Extension Services Office (ESO), headed by Dr. Glyn G. Magbanua, the event brought together speakers and experts.

Prof. Maricar U. Juaneza, Prof. Rowell P. Nitafan from USM, and Samantha Custer, Policy Director of AidData, were the speakers of the activity. Also, Bryan Burgess, Senior Policy Specialist at AidData, Jonathan A. Solis, AidData Research Specialist, and representatives from Asia Society Philippines: Timothy Joseph Henares, Project Manager; Isabel Santiago, Project Assistant; and Angela Marie P. Belonia, Program Officer were present in the event.

During the panel discussion, Remie Delos Santos, The Mindanao Tech Editor-in-Chief, raised concerns about the jeepney modernization program, asking whether it would move the Philippines forward or otherwise. Prof. Nitafan responded by saying, “At every cost, there is an opportunity,” highlighting the complexities of modernization. Prof. Bretaña also inquired about how local communities could be better informed about Chinese investments. The panelists emphasized the need for stronger communication programs to raise awareness at the grassroots level.

The event, attended by representatives from the Philippine Army and employees of USM, concluded with a role-playing activity that allowed participants to engage in discussions about their roles related to the topic.
