Thirteen schools from different regions of Mindanao joined the “Hudyaka” 2nd Mindanao Microbiology Olympiad Finals Round, on March 14, 2025 at the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) in Kabacan, Cotabato.

The thirteen senior high schools from Mindanao who competed for the team and individual competitions were: Atty. Orlando S. Rimando Sr. National High School, Brokenshire College of Toril, Inc., Maragusa National High School, Philippine Science High School-Southern Mindanao Campus, Kidapawan City National High School, Koronadal National Comprehensive High School, Southern Christian College, Agusan National High School, Butuan City Senior High School-Stand Alone, Libertad National High School, Philippine Science High School-Caraga Region Campus, Northern Mindanao Region, Central Mindanao University Laboratory High School and Valencia National High School.

Koronadal National Comprehensive High School (KNCHS) emerged victorious as they bagged the first place in both the Team Quiz and Individual Quiz categories.

Following the competition, students from various schools took part in a career guidance session organized by the society. This offered valuable insights into potential career paths in microbiology and related fields.

In an interview, Rico John Gorieza, the USM Microbiology Society President said that USM is grateful to be the host institution in Mindanao of the Olympiad.

“We have seen in the industry that there’s gap in the [number of] scientists especially microbiologist in the country, hence we further invite senior high school students in this activity to help them see and [maybe] consider microbiology program in college,” he underscored.

With its theme “hudyaka”, a Bisaya term for celebration, the Microbiology Olympiad, which began in 2023, seeks to unite talented students across the Philippines who have deep interest in the field of microbiology. By encouraging participation, it aims to increase the number of students pursuing careers in microbiology who will ultimately contribute to the growth of the country’s pool of skilled microbiologists.
