The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) proudly celebrated its 71st Founding Anniversary with the recognition of its Outstanding Alumni Awardees, honoring distinguished graduates whose achievements have brought prestige to the institution and made lasting contributions to their fields and communities on October 1, 2025 at the University Auditorium, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato.

This year’s honorees embody excellence in research, education, entrepreneurship, and extension, reflecting USM’s mission of producing globally competent graduates who are catalysts for change.

Dr. Tamie C. Solpot, a BS Agriculture (Plant Pathology) graduate, was conferred the Outstanding Alumnus for Research Award. Now a Professor at USM and Director of the Philippine Industrial Crops Research Institute (PICRI), Dr. Solpot has bridged research and practice by developing sustainable crop protection and management strategies. His work was nationally recognized when he received the Romulo G. Davide Excellence in Extension and Community Development Award from the Philippine Phytopathological Society in 2025.

Dr. Lynette A. Bontia (BSA Plant Pathology, 1985), President of the Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST), was named Outstanding Alumna for Education/Administration. She has championed academic excellence and institutional innovation, with SPAMAST gaining recognition as one of the Outstanding National Agencies in Malita. Her leadership earned her the Outstanding Educator Award at the 2024 Malitaño Awards.

Dr. Ronald L. Lunar (DVM, 2008), founder and proprietor of the Davao Emergency Veterinary Hospital (DEVH), was recognized as the Outstanding Alumnus for Entrepreneurship. His facility has become a trusted provider of specialized and emergency veterinary care in Mindanao, while also promoting animal welfare, professional development, and community awareness on responsible pet ownership.

Dr. Gary P. Lagatiera (BSE–General Science, 2001), College President of the Monkayo College of Arts, Sciences, and Technology (MonCAST), was awarded Outstanding Alumnus for Education. His leadership has transformed MoCAST into a thriving institution that offers accessible, high-quality education aligned with regional development goals. He continues to advocate for inclusive learning opportunities that empower local youth.
