USM-ESO Kickstarts 2025 with Newswriting Training-Workshop

To enhance the writing skills of project leaders, education program specialists, and student members of project management teams of ESO 2025 projects, the University of Southern Mindanao Extension Services Office (USM-ESO) hosted a Training-Workshop on Newswriting on January 31, 2025, at the ESO Conference Room.

The training-workshop focused on equipping the participants with the essential skills to write compelling and effective news articles to meet the need for quality reporting in line with the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) report requirements for normative funding and Performance-Based Bonus (PBB) eligibility. Additionally, the workshop addressed the documentation needs of accreditation bodies, such as AACCUP, ISO, and PQA, which require the publication of reports in various formats such as print, broadcast, and digital.

A total of 56 participants attended the workshop, representing several offices and colleges, including the Research Development Office (RDO), College of Agriculture (CA) Newsletter, College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), College of Business, Development, Economics, and Management (CBDEM), College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), College of Trades and Industry (CTI), and the Institute of Sports Education and Recreation (ISPEAR).

Prof. Anamarie B. Uyangurin, faculty member of Department of English Language and Literature, College of Arts and Social Sciences (DELL-CASS), served as the Resource person during the training.

“Regardless of your course, you have an edge if you know how to write well. Writing is a plus factor,” said Prof. Uyangurin.

She underlined the value of strong writing skills across all fields, guiding participants through the essential components of crafting news articles, including structure, clarity, and the importance of engaging the target audience.

The training-workshop concluded with a formal presentation and critiquing, where participants received feedback on their written articles, further refining their skills.

The USM Extension Services Office expressed its continued commitment to professional development, ensuring its project teams are well-prepared to meet institutional and regulatory expectations while enhancing their communication competencies.
