GREAT NEWS USM BATCH 2022 GRADUATES
May 19, 2025
In its continued effort to promote innovation and entrepreneurship, the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) through the Intellectual Property, Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (IPTTBDO) conducted a mentoring session titled “Preparation of Pitch Deck and Pitching Techniques” on May 14, 2025 at the USM Skyroom, Administration Building, Kabacan, Cotabato.
The session is part of the university’s effort to prepare student-innovators for the new category of the In-House Review such as innovation and pitching competition. Additionally, this initiative is grounded in USM’s response to the Philippine Innovation Act (RA 11293) and the directive of the new president, Dr. Jonald L. Pimentel, to position USM as a Research Entrepreneurial University.
The training commenced with the opening message from Dr. Debbie Marie B. Verzosa, Vice President for Research, Development, and Extension (VPRDE), which was delivered by Dr. Florence Roy Salvaña, Director of the Research Publication and Support Office (RPSO). She emphasized the importance of turning research into real-world solutions and sustainable ventures.
The highlight of the event was the comprehensive lecture led by Dr. Jalaloden B. Marohom, Director of IPTTBDO and Project Leader of USMart TBI. With his vast experience in technology business incubation and technology pitching, Dr. Marohom provided student-innovators with a structured approach to creating persuasive, investor-ready pitch decks.

He covered the fundamentals of building a compelling pitch, including how to clearly define the problem and articulate the value proposition. He also introduced the “10+1 Slide Formula”, a structured approach to pitch deck emphasizing crucial aspects like right solutions addressing real problems by the right customers, market size, competitive advantage, and financial projections. Additionally, Dr. Marohom shared his “Tips for a Winning Pitch”, offering practical advice on engaging audiences, simplifying complex ideas, and delivering with confidence.

An open forum followed the session, allowing participants to raise questions and receive feedback directly from the speaker. This interactive segment helped bridge theory with practical application.
Dr. Lydia Pascual, Director of the Research Development Office (RDO), concluded the event with a message reinforcing the university’s commitment to research-based innovation and the commercialization of academic outputs. This successful event marks a vital step in strengthening USM’s innovation ecosystem and preparing its researchers and students to compete in both academic and entrepreneurial arenas.
