The Department of Science and Technology – National Research Council of the Philippines (DOST-NRCP) and the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) signed a Memorandum of Agreement on February 24, 2026, at the Office of the President, Admin Building, USM, Kabacan, for a new research project on banana farming.

Dr. Ma. Teodora N. Cabasan of USM’s College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) proposed and will lead the project. Dr. Cabasan is also an associate member of NRCP Division VI (Agriculture and Forestry). Under the agreement, NRCP will provide a grant of ₱3,999,220.50. The council will also give technical guidance and help coordinate with partner organizations.

USM officials present during the signing were University President Dr. Jonald L. Pimentel, Vice President for Research, Development and Extension Dr. Debbie Marie B. Verzosa, Project Leader Dr. Cabasan, and Accountant III Ms. Winnalyn V. Gallo.

Dr. Cabasan shared that the study will focus on soil organisms found in banana farms managed in different ways.

“This project will provide scientific evidence on how farming methods affect pest control and soil fertility, supporting improved crop productivity,” she said.

She also said the project will strengthen USM’s work in sustainable agriculture, soil biology, and agroecology. It will open more opportunities for students and researchers to take part in meaningful studies and share what they learn with local farmers.

Dr. Cabasan thanked USM and DOST-NRCP for their trust and support. Through this partnership, both institutions hope to help farmers grow healthier crops and build more productive farms in the region.
