October 31, 2024USM-OSA Meets, Greets USM PALMA Community
November 4, 2024The University of Southern Mindanao (USM), in collaboration with the USM Volunteers Club (UVC), donated relief packs and other essential supplies to families affected by recent flooding caused by typhoon Kristine in Barangay Bantac, Magpet, Cotabato, on October 31, 2024.
According to Mr. Jovy F. Unabia, the Punong Barangay of Bantac, the areas most affected were Purok 6 and Purok 1. A total of 123 households—70 in Purok 6 and the others in Purok 1—lost their homes, with children and the elderly among those most severely impacted. He also noted that many residents suffered from post-disaster illnesses, such as fever, cough, and headaches, after the devastating event.
In response to the crisis, various local organizations, alongside USM, provided support, including medicines and medical check-ups.
“Ang kulang sa mga nawalan ng bahay ngayon ay mga gamit pang-bahay. Sana po may makapag donate para kunti nalang ang problema ng Barangay at sana po kung may mag dodonate pa ay sana dalhin na po dito sa Bantac para po maipamigay na po sa mga nangangailangan”, Mr. Unabia said.
USM, together with its dedicated team led by the Extension Services Office (ESO), distributed hygiene kits, canned goods, noodles, and clothing to those in need. The university plans to return to the said Barangay to provide further assistance and continue its support for the community’s recovery.
