TULUNAN, COTABATO — Advancing its commitment to community literacy, the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) Department of English Language and Literature (DELL) returned to Bacong National High School on March 6, 2026. This visit marked the second round of the Campus Journalism Training under the extension project, “SULAT: Strengthening Understanding, Literacy, Advocacy, and Textualization for Blaan Youth and Educators.”

The session, titled “Campus Journalism Foundations: Layout and Design, News and Sports Writing,” engaged a total of 69 participants, empowering 55 aspiring student journalists and 14 dedicated educators.

To provide high-level, strategic training, USM-DELL deployed a specialized team of experts to guide the participants through the intricacies of modern journalism. The program featured two intensive technical sessions: Prof. Marlon T. Salvador led a dynamic discussion on the art of News and Sports Writing, while Prof. Lloyd Anton Von M. Colita shared his expertise in Layout and Design.

The training concluded with a formal ceremony, where certificates of participation and appreciation were awarded to the attendees and resource speakers, marking a significant milestone in their journalistic development.

The seamless execution of this initiative was made possible by the Project Management Team, a collaborative assembly of seasoned faculty members and student representation dedicated to the SULAT project’s mission:

  1. Prof. Orfelina M. Ajero
  2. Prof. Marlon T. Salvador
  3. Prof. Lloyd Anton Von M. Colita
  4. Prof. Rezeille May C. Amilbahar
  5. Prof. Mirasol O. Verona
  6. Prof. Donnie M. Tulud
  7. Prof. Estella Barbosa
  8. Prof. Elangbai B. Dimasingkil
  9. Alexa Luces (Student Representative)

As SULAT continues its implementation throughout 2026, the USM-DELL team is set to transition into the next critical phase of the project, focusing on specialized Reading Intervention Sessions designed to bridge literacy gaps. This phase will feature comprehensive reading tutorials specifically tailored to improve the proficiency of struggling readers in Bacong.
