September 13, 2024“The library should be a place where curiosity is nurtured and discipline is fostered.” Dr. Francisco Gil N. Garcia, USM President, highlighted this during his speech at the Kundo E. Pahm Learning Resource Center (KEPLRC) Library Day celebration on September 12, 2024, held at the KEPLRC lobby, University of Southern Mindanao, Kabacan, Cotabato.
In addition, President Garcia likened the modern-day library to the fate of dinosaurs, saying, “It is becoming extinct.” He challenged the KEPLRC team to rethink making the library more inviting and relevant. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a comfortable, cool, and welcoming environment to attract students and the broader community.
Prof. Susan Martinez, KEPLRC Director, highlighted that the Library Day is more than just a celebration – it is a tribute to the late USM President, Kundo E. Pahm, who established the library on September 12, 1989. In 2017, the library was officially named in his honor, following BOR Resolution No. 104, series of 2017.
Further, a significant moment during the event was the official launch of “Kapihan sa Aklatan,” an initiative designed to create a space for intellectual exchange and cultural engagement within the University. Prof. Martinez explained that this initiative is part of their effort to modernize libraries.
In an interview, Prof. Martinez shared that USM has developed an online library portal accessible through the university’s official website, https://www.usm.edu.ph/student/kundo-e-pahm-learning-resource-center/. The portal offers electronic resources, an Open Public Access Catalog, open educational resources, archival publications, and more, making it easier for students and faculty to access materials from anywhere.
President Garcia, the four Vice Presidents, Deans of the different colleges, KEPLRC staff, faculty members, students, and other guests attended the activity. The “Kapihan sa Aklatan” will be held monthly, free for all library users, with plans to eventually include a coffee shop as part of an income-generating project.
