The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) celebrated the first Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Month on July 25-26, 2024, at the USM Skyroom, Administration Building, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato.

On the first day of the event, PSSG Rogelop Amaga Caparoso Jr., the Assistant Team Leader and Chief Investigator of the Cotabato Provincial Cyber Response Team discussed the growing concern about different types of cybercrime and the importance of vigilance and preventive measures.

Engr. Mohadjirin P. Matanog, the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) Provincial Officer of Cotabato, represented the keynote speaker, Engr. Ibrahim B. Guiapar Jr., Regional Director of DICT Region XII. In his address, Engr. Matanog highlighted the significant impact of technology on everyday life and emphasized the importance of responsible use and development.

“Technology is developed by humans, and it is up to us how we will use it to our advantage.” He remarked. Also, he mentioned the dual nature of technology as both a tool for advancement and a potential source of challenges if not managed properly.

On the second day, Mr. Neil Obbus, a Cisco Product Support Engineer, presented cybersecurity solutions, covering the essentials of securing networks using Cisco technologies. Engr. Warren C. Badong, a Cisco Certified Network Professional, continued the discussion, which focused on advanced systems for network protection.

The activity, broken down into three technical seminars about ICT and cybersecurity aspects, was made possible through the collaboration of DICT, the University Information and Communications Technology Office (ICTO), and the Provincial Government of Cotabato.

In an interview, Prof. Eugene G. Ranjo, the UICTO Director, expressed his gratitude for the successful turnout of the activity. He said he looks forward to more relevant initiatives, such as adding the ICT Month Celebration to the academic calendar and engaging ICT-related organizations in various activities.

With its theme: “Security Governance in the Digital Era”, the activity emphasized the role of technology in modern life that aims to enhance awareness and knowledge about information and communication technologies (ICT) among students and staff.

In his State of the University Address in 2022, President Francisco Gil Garcia presented his 7-point agenda. One of them is to gradually transform USM into a smart university that offers innovative working, learning, and teaching ways.
