The University of Southern Mindanao (USM), through the Microbiology Society (MicroSoc), brought home five awards from a series of academic competitions organized by the Philippine Society for Microbiology (PSM), Inc.-Mindanao Chapter, held on November 20-22, 2024, in Cagayan de Oro City.
Three gold medals were awarded for the Oral Research Presentation category during the 29th Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting of the organization.
Gold medalists include Rico John Gorieza, who presented the undergraduate thesis of Laurence Hope Guerrero in the undergraduate category, and USM alumni Jade Amythist Sevillano and Datujun Abu in the professional category.
Additionally, USM secured a bronze medal in the Higher Education Institution (HEI) Bazaar and Educational Exhibit competition.
The team composed of Ianvan Ancheta, Rhea Deita, and Nikki Clar also earned a bronze medal during the Philippine Microbiology Olympiad 2024-Mindanao Leg at Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan. Prof. Cromwel Jumao-as and Prof. Prince Nur-Hakeem Buisan coached the team.
USM MicroSoc also received three plaques of commendation for community engagement initiatives, including the Mindanao Microbiology Olympiad, Project CCC, and Project Katunggan.
“This victory is a testament to our team’s dedication and passion for microbiology. Bringing home five medals reflects the hard work and collaborative spirit of everyone involved,” said Rico John Gorieza, president of USM MicroSoc, in an interview.
The national convention will be held in 2025 at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila, while the next Mindanao-wide convention will take place at Central Mindanao University (CMU) in Bukidnon.
