Kabacan, Cotabato – The University of Southern Mindanao Extension Services Office (USM-ESO) successfully aired Episode III of Ugnayan Natin Season VI on June 19, 2025, via DXVL KOOL FM 94.9 and streamed via DXVL FB Page.
The one-hour, forum-style radio program featured Dr. Janelle G. Sambo, a College of Medicine (COM) faculty, who served as the resource person. Dr. Sambo focused on dispelling myths and promoting accurate information regarding Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
The discussion covered essential aspects of HIV and AIDS, including their definition, symptoms, and modes of transmission. Dr. Sambo also touched upon available medications, specifically Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), and the ongoing efforts in vaccine development.
A significant portion of the program addressed common misconceptions surrounding the virus.
“We don’t need to avoid people [living with HIV], only the practices that transmit the virus,” Dr. Sambo urged listeners to understand.
She also stressed the importance of knowing the actual modes of HIV transmission to prevent its spread, and to reduce the stigma associated with the virus, thereby encouraging testing and early treatment for those who are positive.
Dr. Sambo also provided crucial reminders, encouraging individuals not to fear getting tested for HIV, emphasizing that testing is both confidential and anonymous.
“There’s a lot you can do even if you are HIV positive; you shouldn’t be afraid,” Dr. Sambo reassured the public.
The program also mentioned the availability of testing centers and referenced Republic Act 8504, also known as the Philippine AIDS Prevention and Control Act of 1998, which outlines policies and programs for HIV/AIDS prevention and control in the country.
