University of Southern Mindanao (USM) President Dr. Jonald L. Pimentel delivered his first State of the University Address (SUA) on September 29, 2025, at the USM Auditorium, setting the strategic direction of the university for the years ahead.
In his message, Pres. Pimentel outlined six key priorities for USM: accessible and inclusive education, stronger research and innovation, empowered extension services, sustainable resource generation, wider international linkages, and modernized campus facilities.
He also shared major accomplishments, including the graduation of the first batch of students from the College of Medicine, strong performance in board examinations, recognition of student innovations, and the expansion of academic programs.
Addressing the 20,052 students enrolled this semester, he assured: “You made the right decision—you are in excellent hands here at USM.”
“Our students continue to impress me with their enthusiasm and drive, reminding me why this institution exists – to empower future leaders and innovators,” Pimentel added.
Infrastructure developments, such as new academic buildings, laboratories, and the MIT-USM Alumni House, were also presented. Pimentel said these projects reflect the university’s commitment to providing a better learning environment.
A key highlight of the event was the inaugural Unitalk, a talk show-style segment that gave students, faculty, and non-teaching staff a platform to voice their concerns on issues such as campus facilities, internet connectivity, salaries, and promotions. The University President, joined by the four Vice Presidents, engaged directly with the audience, responding to questions and addressing concerns raised by various members of the university community.
Delivered on his 288th day as President, the SUA became a defining moment for Pimentel’s administration, underscoring USM’s aim to build a more inclusive, dynamic, and globally connected university.
Cotabato Governor Emylou “Lala” Talino-Mendoza, members of the Board of Regents, the Administrative Council, retirees, faculty, non-teaching employees, and students attended the SUA.
