Representatives from the Office of Senator Kiko Pangilinan visited the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) on April 8, 2026 at the Office of the President, Administration Building, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato.
The visit served as a venue for discussions on cacao initiatives and agricultural development involving USM and partner institutions. In particular, both sides discussed ongoing training activities, research efforts, and proposed facilities aimed at strengthening cacao production and supporting farmers in the region.

As part of these efforts, USM reported that more than 700 farmers, teachers, and extension workers have already been trained through its cacao initiatives. These activities were conducted in coordination with the Philippine Cacao Industry Council (PCIC), Philippine Cacao Industry Association (PCIA), Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and other partner agencies.
Meanwhile, the training programs focused on production practices, post-harvest handling, processing methods, and quality improvement techniques for cacao beans. Through these interventions, USM continues to support capacity-building efforts for farmers and extension workers.
In addition, USM presented updates on its cacao genetic resources, including mother plant collections used for breeding and varietal improvement. At present, the university continues research on crop productivity, disease management, and post-harvest technologies related to cacao.
Moreover, plans for a cacao roadmap were also discussed during the meeting, which outlines production areas, industry needs, and strategies aimed at strengthening agricultural development programs for cacao in the country.
Present during the meeting were representatives from the senator’s office, former 3rd District Representative Jose Tejada, Professor Emeritus Edward Barlaan, faculty members of the College of Business, Development, Economics and Management (CBDEM), and Vice President for Administration and Finance Quenielyn Durendes.
