January 28, 2025Noveulab Asia Corporation, a laboratory equipment supplier in Quezon City, offered free Molecular Biology Workshops on DNA Barcoding and Basic Bioinformatics at the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) Skyroom on January 23, 2025.
The workshop was attended by 12 participants from various offices and colleges, including College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), College of Agriculture (CA), and Research Development Office (RDO).
Mr. John Daryl Dumaraos, a Noveulab Asia Corp. Field Application Scientist (FAS), and Ms. Jonah Mae Taping, a Technical Sales Executive for Mindanao, spearheaded the workshop.
The workshop aimed to provide its clients free technical assistance and training, focusing on simplifying bioinformatics—a cornerstone of modern biology. Topics covered included an overview of DNA Barcoding and Basic Bioinformatics, complemented by five practical exercises: Primer Design, Sequence Editing, BLAST Analysis, Multiple Sequence Alignment, and Phylogenetic Tree Construction.
‘We are expecting our participants to learn from our developed module because bioinformatics is one of the cornerstones of modern biology,’ shared Dumaranas.
He emphasized that researchers often find DNA barcoding and bioinformatics intimidating, but with the right guidance and tools, these processes become accessible.
Taping echoed this observation, highlighting the enthusiasm of the participants. “Even those not directly involved in life sciences were eager to learn more. It shows how bioinformatics is relevant across fields.”
‘Participants were highly active and open, raising questions, and demonstrating eagerness to apply their newfound knowledge.’ Dumaranas added.
As of now, only basic bioinformatics has been covered, but the organizers are optimistic about expanding the training in the future.
The workshop proved to be an eye-opener, breaking down complex topics into manageable learning experiences, and paving the way for greater adaptation of molecular biology in research and other relevant fields at the University of Southern Mindanao.
