72nd commencement exercises thumbnailJune 14, 2018 – 2,715 USM students were proclaimed as graduates during the 72nd Commencement Exercises of the University of Southern Mindanao.

95 graduates were awarded with Latin honors: 11 Magna cum Laude, 81 Cum Laude, 2 With High Honors, 1 with Honor. Mark Henry De Leon from the BS Fisheries topped the list of graduates with Latin honors (BS Fisheries-1.3994) Followed by 10 other Magna cum laude awardees, namely: Rachel Awil (BEED-1.4291), Sypril Eloisa Bauzon (BSTM-1.4315), Ashley Coleen Ortiz (BSE Math-1.4315), Jamahiriya Ali (BEED-1.4394), Jan Charisse Viernes (BSTM-1.4510), Wrendel Juntilla (BSE Math-1.4581), Salama Gumbay (BSE PhySci-1.4708), Cyril John Jasareno (BS Chem-1.4754), Aleen Glenn Pama (BSE PhySci-1.4822), and Resshan Mae Cudales (BSE Eng-14936).

Of 2,715 graduates, the College of Education had the most number of graduates (520), followed by: College of Agriculture (476), College of Business Development and Management (436). Institute of Middle East and Asian Studies (257), College of Arts and Sciences (226), College of Engineering and Computing (179), College of Human Ecology and Food Sciences (174), College of Industrial Technology (132), Institute of Sports Physical Education and Recreation (91), College of Veterinary Medicine (38) and College of Health Sciences (34). Meanwhile, a total of 113 graduates were also proclaimed from the USM Graduate School.

Prior to the commencement exercises, a Baccalaureate Program, the traditional worship service took place alongside with the Cluster Graduation on June 13, 2018. A number of 3 clusters were identified: Cluster 1 (Graduate School, CA, CAS, CVM, CENCOM, and CHEFS), Cluster 2 (CBDEM, CED, CHS, CIT-DIT, IMEAS, and ISPEAR), and Cluster 3 for the Recognition and Moving up Program for non-degree courses.

On the day of the commencement exercises, Ms. Lucia C. Cabangbang, University Registrar awarded the Certification of Completion of Requirements for Graduation during the said exercises. SUC President IV Dr. Francisco Gil N. Garcia presented the Declaration of Completion and Conferment of tiles and degrees.

Students who graduated as Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude were awarded with Civil Service Eligibilities granted pursuant to Presidential Decree (P.D.) No. 907, “Granting Civil Service Eligibility to College Honor Graduates”. Mark Henry F. De Leon, Magna Cum Laude from BS Fisheries was also bestowed with the Manny Villar Excellence Award for having been the graduate with the highest GPA (1.3994). Afterwards, Doctoral graduates were imposed with hoods by their parents, guardians, escorts and advisers.

Hon. Senator Cynthia Villar, chairperson for the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food & Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, was awarded Honoris Causa in Doctor of Philosophy in Rural Development.

The class valedictorian Mark Henry De Leon inspired his fellow graduates through his Valedictory speech. Ashley Coleen S. Garcia, USG president SY 2017-2018, led the Pledge of Loyalty. The graduates were then officially inducted as members of the USM Alumni Association a presented by Hon. Consuelo A. Tagaro, president of the USMAA. (By Midpantao Midrah Adil, MindanaoTech)
