The Kundo E. Pahm Learning Resource Center (KEPLRC) of the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) celebrated Librarians’ Day and Library Day in recognition of its establishment on September 12, 2025, at KEPLRC Lobby, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato.

In his speech, Dr. Jonald L. Pimentel, USM President, emphasized the challenges and changes in libraries. He said that libraries now need to adapt to technologies since various resources are now found online. He also highlighted librarians before are strict, but now they are facilitators of knowledge, digital navigators, and community connectors. 

“I am confident that our library will be good to drive in the digital age, we are committed to expanding digital resources, and we will provide technology training and offer workshops, create innovative programs, and improve our collaborations for quality education.” He remarked. 

As an important part of the activity, delegates from the Department of Education (DepEd) Kidapawan and Cotabato Division headed by Dr. Miguel P. Fillalan Jr. CESO V, Schools Division Superintendent, attended as collaborators of KEPLRC. 

In his talk, Dr. Fillalan expressed his appreciation for the invitation and for involving DepEd in improving learning resource centers system in the province. He shared that DepEd Cotabato and Kidapawan have locally crated materials and story books for children which with printed and digital copies uploaded in library portals of the division and DepEd in general.

“We have been confronted by the challenges on language literacy, numeracy, and scientific competencies, hence we are happy for this collaboration where we really need the expertise of the university experts in this endeavor; as the university president said, we don’t just read books, we need to understand, and integrate innovations from reading.” The SDS underscored.

During the occasion, KEPLRC also launched several meaningful initiatives, including Lakbay Silid-Aklatan: Paglalakbay ng Aklat, Wika, at Kultura Tungo sa Pamayanan, a mobile library program promoting books, language, and culture in local communities. Other activities included free film screenings for USM students and a community outreach program in the Municipality of Aleosan, featuring story reading sessions and various literacy-focused activities.

Prof. Susan S. Martinez, the KEPLRC Director, expressed her gratitude for the support of everyone in the occasion, and said “The Library is more than just a building, it is the heart of the university, a place where knowledge is nurtured, culture is preserved, and dreams take rooted.”

The University Library was originally established on September 12, 1989, under the leadership of USM’s 4th President, Kundo E. Pahm. Later, through Board of Regents Resolution No. 104, series of 2017, the University Learning Resource Center was officially renamed KEPLRC. On September 12, 2020, then-President Francisco Gil N. Garcia, PhD, formally dedicated KEPLRC as a center for knowledge, culture, and service.
