With the pavement as the canvas and colored chalk as the medium, a total of 68 student artists transformed a section of the USM Founderโ€™s Avenue into works of art during the Chalk Art Festival last February 8, Wednesday.
Organized by the AB English Society (ABES) with the support of the Playhouse Stage Company and sponsored by the Department of English Language and Literature (DELL), the Chalk Art Festival was the initiative of ABES to celebrate the National Arts Month 2023.
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts declares February of every year as the National Arts Month (NAM). With the theme: โ€œAni ng Sining, Bunga ng Galing,โ€ the 33rd edition of NAM hopes to capture new audiences to appreciate arts and at the same time pay tribute to the uniqueness and diversity of the Filipino art, culture, and heritage.
โ€œChalk Art Festival has always been one of the activities organized under ABES. The first chalk art was under the supervision of Prof. Lloyd Anton Von Colita in July 2011 for his class. So this year, we want to bring it back by providing a bigger venue for all student artists in the University,โ€ shared Philip John Tabada, ABES president.
A total of 45 groups participated this year. Every team was given a section to work on, to showcase their skills in drawing with colored chalk as the medium.
โ€œWe enjoyed the program a lot. This is the first time I witnessed an event like this in USM, and we hope to see more of this in the future,โ€ says Norah Jannah Akmad, a third year AB English Language student.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was graced by the DELL Chair Dr. Orfelina Ajero who together with the eventโ€™s organizer Prof. Colita welcomed the participants and opened the program.
โ€œThis event would not have been possible without the assistance of the faculty members of DELL, VPAA Dr. Geoffray Atok, and the Security Office,โ€ added Tabada.
After the Chalk Art Festival, the students of USM have three more activities to look forward to this month courtesy of ABES and DELL: Spoken Word Poetry on February 14; Seminar-Writeshop on Writing and Directing for Stage and Film on February 24; and the Performance Art on February 28.
