As technology changes its landscape, the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) is open to welcoming the change and taking a step forward, setting to embrace My Campus+ (MC+), a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) project.
MC+ is a product of Allcard Inc. that uses smart cards. These cards contain a microchip with up to one kilobyte of storage to store the cardholder’s data.
The new project means new IDs for the USM students where chips will be incorporated into the IDs for it to work in the new system. Since the MC+ is an RIFD project, it will help track the students’ attendance, their log-ins, and log-outs.
Mon Richard Elopre, the Assistant Manager for Support of Allcard Inc., explained that the system would promote security and convenience within the University.
“Actually the purpose of the RFID System is to enhance the security of the schools. Dati manual logbook tayo. So, sa lahat ng pumapasok kapag ka student, employees, or visitors mina-manual or nilologbook ng mga guards. But this time, meron itong time-keeping function na lahat nang in and out ng students, employees, and visitors natatrack po natin. So, in-automate lang po natin at the same time medyo enhanced na rin,” he said
“Kung mapapansin ninyo may barrier na tayo. So kung wala ka talagang card, hindi ka talaga makakapasok,” he added
The RFID machines are at the USM Welcome Arch. Using the turnstile, the students can have their log-ins and log-outs on the pedestrian.
If they are in vehicles, they can do it on two optionsโusing the tapping station or through the mobile handheld terminal the security guards will navigate.
In an exclusive interview with University President Francisco Gil N. Garcia, PhD, he emphasized that he targets the system to operate before the end of the academic year.
“Sa pagswipe-swipe lang ng ID, mas madali yung attendance ng students at mas secured kayo. Magkaroon rin ng cooperation with the parents and guardians to monitor you in the University kahit malayo sila by that system,” President Garcia further said.
Moreover, University Information and Communication Technology Office (UICTO) Director Eugene Ranjo shared why they are working on the RFID project for the security of the students.
โKung titingnan ninyo safety first ng mga studyante kaya ganon kalaki aang budget para doon [RFID project], para masecure ang mga students,โ Director Ranjo shared.
He added that the RFID project would have its phase 2, which will be at the Mercado gate and the IMEAS gate.
As per the latest update, there is a need to reprint the IDs and students might undergo data capturing to store in the chip then the issuance of the new IDs.
