With the aim to foster responsible online behavior, the Extension Services Office (ESO) at the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) recently hosted a special seminar centered on social media etiquette. Held on April 24, 2024, the event primarily targeted first-year BS Development Communication students, offering them valuable tools for navigating the digital landscape wisely and securely, alongside emphasizing the importance of safeguarding personal information online.

Gathered at the ESO Training room, students were treated to insights from a panel of speakers who shared invaluable advice on maintaining a positive online presence. Through interactive discussions, attendees were introduced to five fundamental principles to uphold when engaging on social media platforms, aimed at fostering a culture of friendliness and respectfulness in online interactions.

A key aspect of the seminar focused on the potential consequences of inappropriate online conduct. Students were sensitized to the profound impact their digital actions can have on their personal and professional lives, both within domestic and workplace settings. Utilizing real-life experience and case studies, speakers illustrated the significance of exercising caution and empathy in online engagements.

Furthermore, privacy protection took center stage during the seminar, with students gaining insights into various methods of securing their personal information on popular social media platforms. Practical demonstrations on utilizing privacy settings effectively were provided, emphasizing the importance of maintaining control over one’s online presence and safeguarding personal data.

Post-seminar feedback from attendees reflected a high level of satisfaction and newfound knowledge. Cathy Dignadice, a participant, shared her enthusiasm: “I anticipated a good seminar, but it exceeded my expectations! I’ve gained invaluable insights into online safety and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”

Significantly, 20 students successfully completed the seminar and were awarded certificates of participation, underscoring their commitment to practicing responsible online behavior and prioritizing internet safety.
