“Be resilient amidst all the problems. Nandiyan lang ang problema, it is just how you handle it. Magiging successful din tayong lahat, in our own time.” These are the words of University of Southern Mindanao President Francisco Gil N. Garcia as he graced the 25th Gawad Parangal on May 21, 2024, held at the USM Auditorium, Kabacan, Cotabato, as a guest of honor and speaker.

Aside from the recognition and awards given to the outstanding students and organizations, the zenith of the occasion was an inspiring speech by the President whose words resonated with the attendees with hope and resilience.

President Garcia shared the story of his journey from a modest upbringing to becoming the leader of USM. He began his narrative by sharing his early life, where his father was a fish vendor, and his mother, a housewife, provided a humble and loving environment. He also recounted his childhood memory during Christmas when he optimistically hung a stocking, hoping Santa Claus would fill it, only to find it empty each time. But this didn’t dampen his spirit, “Kaya sa murang isip ko, gusto kong maging propesyonal dahil yung aking mga pinsan nakakatikim ng balot samantalang ang inihanda ng nanay ko ay nilagang itlog ng pato na pag-aari ng aming kapitbahay.”, he shared. These experiences gave him the motivation to achieve more and improve his circumstances.

One of his key messages was the importance of forming meaningful relationships. As he touched on the anecdotes from his youth, he shared that he is friends with those who excel in schoolwork or with those who bring delicious snacks. These friendships provided practical benefits and taught him the value of mutual support.

Quoting from his speech, “Minsan pa nga, may pinatira akong buntis sa aming pamamahay. Tinulungan ko siya ng walang iniisip na kapalit. That was sometime in 1983. Comes the time for my renewal as president noong 2021, umikot ang mundo at ang isang miyembro ng evaluation committee ko ay kapatid noong buntis na yun at tumulong sa evaluation ko.” For him, this experience proved how acts of kindness can come back in unexpected and impactful ways.

Pres. Garcia also emphasized the importance of self-love and recognizing one’s worth, as he stated in Ephesians 1:11, “In Him, we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of His will”. Encouraging that everyone should not compare themselves to others since every individual has a unique journey, and each existence has a purpose. Further, he highlighted self-love as this will allow someone to see the good things around him. “Kapag mahal mo ang sarili mo, mga positibong bagay ang nakikita mo sa iyong kapaligiran. Nagiging matatag ang iyong puso para harapin ang buhay. Kailangan mong ipanalo ang buhay.”He underscored.

Sharing his battle with cancer in 2012, he spoke about choosing to live life fully despite the diagnosis. His resilience and faith were crucial to his journey, especially as the University president.

The USM President concluded his speech with remarks on the importance of enjoying life, living with intention, and setting meaningful goals. He also encouraged the audience to focus on creating a life that aligns with their values and brings joy and fulfillment.

He expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve as the university President. Reflecting on his nearly 67 years of life, he acknowledged that his term would soon end but felt confident as he has seen the best in the many. “I have tried to live for others because if we live only for ourselves, we live a shallow life.” He shared.  He also quoted Helen Keller: “Life is an exciting business and most exciting and enjoyable if we live for others,” showing his philosophy of living a life dedicated to service and community.

The 25th Gawad Parangal honors individual achievements and celebrates at the same time the winnings of the whole USM community. The event served as a reminder that resiliency and steadfast faith are the foundations of success.

As the ceremony ended, the words of the Jedi from Star Wars echoed in the hearts of many: “May the force be with you.”
