ESales-named-2019-CSSP-Honorary-fellow-thumbsIn recognition of her exemplary service as a scientist and educator par excellence in crop biotechnology, an institution builder, and an outstanding partner of various stakeholders in agriculture, Dr. Emma K. Sales, director of Publication Office and Professor 6 from the College of Agriculture, was named the 2019 Crop Science Society of the Philippines (CSSP) Honorary Fellow.

The awarding was held on September 19, 2019 at the Apo View Hotel, Davao City during the 25th Federation of Crop Science Societies of the Philippines and 1st Federation of Crop Science Societies of the Philippines Scientific Conference.

Sales has had numerous accomplishments under her belt. Among which she established the first Tissue Culture and Biotechnology Laboratory in Region 12. She also developed a suite of molecular diagnostic tools for the identification of varieties of durian, rubber, and mango which have become indispensable to farmers all throughout the country. With these tools, she has strengthened the Bureau of Plant Industry in the certification and authentication of rubber planting materials and accreditation of rubber nurseries.

In University of Southern Mindanao (USM), she paved the way for the institutionalization of Biotechnology as a core subject across all USM curricular program offerings as basis for science-based facts about biotechnology. She sourced out scholarship grant for their Biotechnology students. As Vice President for RD&E from 2010 to 2013, she generated several millions of research funds for USM and developed and copyrighted the USM Research Manual and USM Research Handbook for Thesis Writing.

Her commendable track record truly proves Dr. Sales to be deserving of this year’s prestigious CSSP Honorary Fellow Award. Presenting the award were Marissa V. Romero, chair of Awards and Recognition Committee, and Edna A. Anit, CSSP president.
