USM wins big in MASTS 2018; winners advance to national PASUC PDF Print E-mail

PASUC 2018 winLabuyo, Tangub City – University of Southern Mindanao (USM) participants to the Mindanao Association of State and Tertiary Schools (MASTS) Friendly Games 2018 were among the best in Mindanao after bagging several wins in this year’s socio-cultural competitions held on October 26-29, 2018 at Northwestern Mindanao State College of Science and Technology, Labuyo,Tangub City.

MASTS is an annual literary, socio-cultural competitions aimed at celebrating and honing students’ skills and talents across the country. With only 33 participants, USM was among the smallest delegations this year. However, out of the 21 participating colleges and universities, USM managed to clinch the Top 6 spot with just 5 points away from the Fifth Place.

The USM delegation headed by Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation (ISPEAR) Dean Dr. Judy Garcia and Socio-Cultural Affairs Chair Ms. Jessa Buisan brought glory and honor to the University after winning in 14 competitions.

Bringing the gold back to USM in Essay Writing was Orville Flores after he was declared champion with his coach Mr. Jallal Malaguia (see photo). Flores is a 5th Year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine student while Mr. Malaguia is an English faculty from the Senior High School.

Meanwhile, finishing first runner up were Alster Rey A. Ende for Poster Making with coach Mr. Judy Lim and Renalie A. Porfelio and Dianne Nicole C. Laus for Vocal Duet with coach Mr. Jalvin James Gaspan. Donn kart Venz J. Mangubat, Merry Sweth D. Camson, Rico Jay E. Oyao, and Jancarl Criz D. Leones bagged second runner up in Quiz Bowl with their coach Mr. Gerwin Alcalde. Genre Bolaron won third runner up in Extemporaneous Speaking with coach Mr. Ronel Naringahon and Omar A. Mamento for Pagsusulat ng Sanaysay with coach Dr. Ma. Luz Calibayan. Chellsy Loise Resaba landed the third runner up spot in the search for Ms. MASTS 2018 and Datu Ibrahim S. Angkay II winning third runner up with coach Ms. Amme Rose Blonto.

Among the fourth runner up winners this year were Elmer Pelobillo, Jr for On-the-Spot Painting, Joven Rey Parana for Charcoal Rendering, and Aladin Uso for Pencil Drawing with their coach Mr. Judy Lim.Harry Vic Oriel won 8th Place for Solo (Kundiman) with coach Mr. Bryan Joe Orpiano. Jamie C. Aquino won 9th Place for Storytelling with coach Ms. Amme Rose Blonto. Lastly, Ployd Romer Vesillas won 11th Place in the Dagliang Talumpati with coach Dr. Nelia O. Du.

The winners would represent USM and the region in the national Philippine Association of State University and College (PASUC) competitions to be held on November 27, 2018 in Davao City. (Lloyd Anton Von M. Colita, UPRIO)
