Faculty and students of the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) spearheaded an inception meeting for the extension project “Bionihan para sa Kalikasan: Sustainable Initiatives for Biodiversity Conservation” for the year 2025 in Columbio, Sultan Kudarat, on February 21, 2025.

Project leader Dr. Cherie Cano-Mangaoang highlighted the significance of conserving biodiversity and safeguarding the environment through scientific research and analysis for improved understanding of various environmental situations. The Bionihan 2025 aims to oversee and further enhance the tools developed for environmental conservation during Bionihan 2024 through trainings on farming systems, harvesting, and processing of crops in agroforest ecosystems for sustainability.

In a collaborative effort with the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer (MENRO) of Columnio, led by Mr. Lauro V. Domondon, Jr., MPA, the inception meeting was attended by various business owners, the municipality’s sanitary inspector, and Deputy Environmental and Natural Resources officers representing all barangays of Columbio,

Five students from USM presented their research findings to the participants. Studies on food and water safety for both household and recreational activities were discussed.  The team provided a clear explanation for their findings and proposed recommendations.

“It turns out that the issues faced by MENRO are not limited to waste; even the smallest pests in water and soil are also a concern.”, said Mr. Domondon during his closing message. He expressed his gratitude, noting that the project provided valuable insights and knowledge for addressing environmental challenges in the municipality. He also mentioned that their office will wholeheartedly support the USM extension projects and the students conducting research in the future.

Bionihan para sa Kalikasan was initiated in 2023 with aim of promoting environmental protection and biodiversity conservation in Columbio, Sultan Kudarat.
