Dr. William “Bill” Atweh brings his 40 years of experience as a mathematics educator to the University of Southern Mindanao Graduate School as guest professor for the first semester, school year 2020-2021.

A sought-after speaker in major conferences around the globe and author of 9 published books on action research and mathematics education, Dr. Atweh is one of the leading figures in the development of learning frameworks and pedagogies in mathematics. He will join the roster of USM faculty handling Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics Education (PhD Math Ed).

“With Bill’s vast experience and expertise in education, research, and publication, our students in the program will definitely gain a lot from him,”

said Dr. Leorence Tandog, USM GS dean and PhD Math Ed program head.

Atweh is an adjunct professor at the Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Australia and Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. His research interests include socio-cultural factors in mathematics education including gender and socioeconomic background; globalization, post school pathways and action research. He has conducted research and professional development activities in the Philippines, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Korea, and Vietnam.

In the Philippines, Atweh first served as visiting professor in two other universities: De La Salle University (DLSU) in 2014 and Philippine Normal University (PNU) in 2015.

Dr. Atweh’s guest professorship in USM, however, is not the first time he will be partnering with our University. In 2015, he was invited as the keynote speaker in “PAGTUDLO 2015: National Conference-Workshop on Enhancing the Quality of Teaching and Learning through Productive Pedagogy, Research, and Data Analysis” organized by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the College of Education held on August 21-23, 2015 at the Cafe Martina.

Soon after, he returned to USM as keynote speaker during “PAGSUSI 2017: International Conference-Workshop on Transformative Social Research and Pedagogy in Support of K12 Reforms and other Advocacies” held on April 20-29, 2017.

He was then invited two years later as keynote speaker in “PAGSUSI 2019: Engaging Students in Higher Order Thinking: A Make-it Take-it International Seminar-Workshop” on May 29-31 and July 6, 2019.

While at USM, Atweh said he will work to train USM mathematics educators who endeavor a more effective teaching in higher education.

“It is safe to say that Dr. Bill Atweh has been instrumental in shaping the landscape of mathematics education in the world and in the Philippines, especially in USM,” said Prof.  Rowel Madio, USM faculty and dissertation advisee of Dr. Atweh for PhD Science Education major in Math at DLSU. “Having him here in USM is certainly an honor, and we look forward to collaborating with him more in the coming semester”.

Dr. Atweh also proved that his heart is big enough after donating two smartphones to be given to two deserving USM students. The GS Dean Dr. Tandog will coordinate with the USM Guidance Center to determine who these lucky and deserving students will be.

Coming into the new normal, USM is switching to modular and online learning modality for the first semester. Dr. Atweh through the GS and Dr. Tandog hopes to help deserving students from USM. Names of the chosen students will be announced at the USM Graduate School official Facebook page: www.facebook.com/USMGraduateSchool.
