September 20, 2023To safeguard the intellectual property of the University and strengthen IP and technology commercialization (TC) operations, the University institutionalized the USM Intellectual Property, Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (USM IPTTBDO). The office is a timely and appropriate response to government initiatives aimed at technology transfer, the promotion of entrepreneurship, and the stimulation of inclusive growth. Dr. Jalaloden B. Marohom was designated as Head of Office.
The main objective of the USM IPTTBDO is to protect, transfer, and commercialize research outputs of faculty, researchers, and students leading to business development. USM faculty and constituents are encouraged to approach the office to register their IP outputs and seek guidance on how these can be protected, commercialized, and utilized by the community.
Specifically, functions of the office are to:
- lead in the identification, protection, and management of the University’s intellectual properties (IPs) generated from R&D;
- develop and monitor the implementation of the IP policy, technology transfer, and technology business incubation protocol;
- monitor implementation of projects and activities on IP generation, technology commercialization and technology business incubation;
- establish services on intellectual property, technology transfer and business development priority areas in consonance with and in support of regional/national priorities;
- strengthen IP promotion and commercialization of technologies generated from R&D;
- assist in securing research collaborations and funding from commercial enterprises;
- initiate capacity-building activities in areas of entrepreneurship, finance, marketing, human resources, business modeling, business planning, business legal concerns, and intellectual property management; and
- create and maintain database of the University’s IP assets and commercialized technologies.
