Exactly 502 years ago, Ferdinand Magellan, a Spanish conqueror, inaugurated the establishment of Christianity in the Philippines, and this was symbolized as he erected a tall wooden cross on the shores of Sugbuโnow Cebu City.
The planting of this cross caused a mass baptism, making Rajah Humabon, a native chief, the first ever indigenous ruler of the Philippines to be baptized as a Christian.
Today, the symbolic wooden cross still continues to stand and is now a well-known tourist attraction in the city. It is housed in an octagonal pavilion made of coral stone, matched with a Sistine Chapel-like ceiling painting that depicts the historical events led by Magellan himself.
Filipinos, particularly Cebuanos, continue to honor and commemorate this event through the “Via Crucis” held in the pavilion.
