After multiple years of hiatus, USM Chemistry Society (ChemSoc) revived the traditional University Chemistry Day, to be held tomorrow, March 3, at the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) lobby.
Commonly known to host competitions such as Amazing Race, Quiz Bee, and Magic Show, the Society tapped on the familiar vibes of old school Chem Day, inviting USMians to participate in the events for cash prizes up to Php 1,000.00.
In an interview with ChemSoc President Hannah Daphne Presto, she said it was important for the her to involve more USMians from outside Societies to be more exposed to Chemistry as a field, to further encourage students to appreciate the everyday relevance of science.
“Chemistry is not just a field driven by chemists; to achieve meaningful results, we need to work with biologists, engineers, food technicians, pharmacists, and science communicators, and that’s the main point we’re trying to promote in this event,” Presto explained.
Tomorrow, the Society will be conducting an opening program at 8am, to be immediately followed by the commencement of contest events.
All USMians were invited to participate in the Team Quiz Bee competition (3 quizzers per team), Individual Quiz Bee, and Amazing Race Competition (7 participants per team).
Teams may pre-register through the link provided in the Society Facebook page, although walk-in registrants are allowed tomorrow. In the afternoon, the Society will conduct a Magic Show in the same venue.
“I am really excited for tomorrow since all of us really worked hard for this event. I hope to see a lot of budding chemists in our event,” Presto added.
Furthermore, interested first year participants will be excused from their NSTP participants, according to event organizers.
