December 09, 2022—The SOCCSKSARGEN Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (SOXAARRDEC) conducted its 29th Regional Symposium on Research and Development Highlights at the USM Commercial Building, University of Southern Mindanao (USM), Kabacan, Cotabato.

As the consortium’s biggest event of the year, the member institutions of SOXAARRDEC competed for the best papers and posters for research and development categories. Distinguished evaluators were invited namely, Dr. Allan B. Siano, the Director of the Crops Research Division of the Department of Science and Technology- Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development, (DOST-PCAARRD), Dr. Emmanuel P. Leano, the Consortium Director of the Northern Mindanao Consortium for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development, and Dr. Cecirly G. Puig, the Research and Development Cluster Coordinator of the Southern Mindanao Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (SMAARRDEC).

The following are the results of the best papers and posters in research and development categories:

Research Paper

BEST PAPER: Edward A. Barlaan (USM) “Development, Evaluation and Validation of DNA Probe Kits for Detection and Monitoring of Banana Disease Pathogens In Digital PCR or Quantitative Real-Time PCR: A Boost To Banana Industry”

2nd BEST PAPER: Rande Dechavez, Ma. Best papers for research and development categories received a plaque and 10,000php, 2nd best paper received a certificate and 7, 000php and the 3rd best paper received a certificate and 5, 000php.

Poster (Development Research Category)

BEST POSTER: (PhilRice-MES) “RICEBIS Midsayap Increasing Farmers’ Productivity and Income Through Agroenterprise Engagement”

2nd BEST POSTER (PhilRice-MES) “Rice Knowledge Relay from Specialists to Farmers”

3rd BEST POSTER (DA-RFO12) “Mitigating and Biosecurity towards an African Swine Fever (ASF) – Free Livestock Sector in Second District of Cotabato Province.”

Best posters for research and development categories received a plaque and 5,000, 2nd best poster received a certificate and 3, 000php and the 3rd best poster received a certificate and 2, 000php.

Present at the activity were representatives from DA-RFO 12, PhilRice-MES, USM, SKSU, Cotabato Foundation College of Science and Technology (CFSCT), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, and South Cotabato State College (SCSC) and Regional Agri-fishery Information System (RAFIS), and Provincial Agriculturist Office.

Dr. Sailila E. Abdula, the SOXAARRDEC RRDDC Chairperson highlighted in his message that he is glad for the conduct of the symposium to showcase and highlight research breakthroughs not just for researchers but more so for the farmers and fisherfolks.“As your Consortium Chair, I challenge you to do (ICE) Innovate, Create and Engage to boost the aid for the farmers and fisher folks in their dilemma in agriculture. Your juvenile yet powerful minds are our threshold in the advancement of modern technology.” He stressed.

Dr. Ma. Teodora N. Cabasan, the Vice-President for Research Development AND Extension of USM, emphasized in her message that the base agency is in full support to SOXAARRDEC for conducting the sympoisum for the development of the region in the fields of agriculture, aquatic and natural resources, from the academe to the government agencies. “As best R&D papers will be evaluated today, let us not consider this as a competition but rather coopetition where different member institutions cooperate such as the aim of this activity.” she concluded.

In her closing remarks, Dr. Josephine R. Migalbin, the Consortium Director expressed her appreciation for the presence of the participants despite the many activities they have in their own stations.  “This biggest event of the year advocates the continuance of our strong ‘ugnayan’ in the SOCCSKSARGEN Region and I am looking forward to seeing all the Research and Development Institutions of SOXAARRDEC conduct research and present papers in the next regional symposium.” She ended.

With the theme: “Sustaining Inclusive Growth in Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources through Responsive R&D Initiatives” SOXAARRDEC aims to showcase, promote, and commercialize research results and technologies generated.

The regional symposium serves as a venue to disseminate the excellent Research & Development (R&D) outputs of its Consortium Member Institutions (CMIs) and keep its stakeholders well-informed of the work and innovations in the agriculture, aquatic, and natural resources sectors.
